Also as of this period, provinces over the country cultivated 903,600 ha of maize, equaling 94.2%; 113,400 ha of sweet potato, equaling 86.2%; 98,300 ha of soybean, equaling 58.4%; 193,500 ha of peanut, equaling 90.8% and 782,100 ha of vegetables, equaling 103.9% from the same period last year.

Forestry


Generally, in 8 months the country’s concentrated newly planted area was at an estimation of 114,900 ha, rose 3,7% from the same period last year; dispersed planted trees reached 138.8 million, rose 0.9%; wood production 3,104,900 m3, rose 11,6%; firewood production 19.6 million Ste, rose 2.6%.

Damaged area was 2,600 ha, of which burnt area were 1,915 ha; destroyed area was 685 ha.

Fishery

Generally, 8 months ‘estimated fishing production reached 3,662,600 tons, rose 4.9% from last year’ same period, of which farmed products reached 2,004,300 tons, rose 5.8%; caught products: 1,658,3 00 tons, rose 3.8%.

Industry


The Industrial Production Index (IPI) for the whole sector in August rose 4.1% from July and by 4.4% from the same period last year. Generally in 8 months, the whole sector’s IPI rose 4.7% IPI for mining and quarrying rose 4.9%, contributed 1 point percent to the general pace, manufacturing by 3.9%, contributed 2.7 points percent; power and gas by 12.7%, contributed 0.9 point percent; water supply and waste treatment and management by 9.8%, contributed 0.1 percent.

Consumption index for the manufacturing in 7 beginning months of the year rose 6.2% from last year’ same period. Stock index as of 01/8/2012 for the manufacturing sector rose 20.8% from last year’ same period.

3. Investment


Generally, eight months’ realized investment capital from the state budget reached 125 trillion dongs, equaling 60.2% of the yearly plan and rising 5.6% from the same period in 2011. Of which, capital under central management was 30.9 trillion dongs, equaling 60.7% of the yearly plan and rising 5.4% from the same period last year; capital under local management was 94.1 trillion dongs, 60% and by 5.7% respectively.

Attracted FDI from beginning of the year to 20/8/2012 reached 8,479 million USD, equaling 66.1% from last year’ same period. Of which, the registered capital of 672 newly licensed projects was 5,524.4 million USD, equaling 80.5% of licensed projects and 56.5% of the registered capital against the same period in 2011; additional registered capital of 244 times of projects licensed from previous years was 2,954.6 million USD. The realized FDI in 8 months of this year was at an estimation of 7.3 billion USD, declined 0.3% from the same period last year.

Eight months’ FDI focused mainly on the sector of manufacture with 5,747.7 million USD, accounted for 67.8%; the real estate business with 1,727 million USD, accounted for 20.4%; and other sectors with 1,004.3 million USD, accounted for 11.8% of total registered capital.

In 8 months, there were 45 provinces/cities having newly licensed FDI projects from 46 foreign countries and territories.

Government revenues and expenditures

Total Government revenues from beginning of the year to 15/8/2012 were at an estimation of 418.5 trillion dongs, equaling 56.5% of the yearly estimate, of which revenues from domestic activities were 268.6 trillion dongs, equaling 54.3%; from crude oil 70.8 trillion dongs, equaling 81.4%; from export-import balances 75 trillion dongs, equaling 48.7%. Of the domestic revenues, receiving from state owned enterprises was 90 trillion dongs, equaling 57.9%; from FDI enterprises (excluding crude oil) 49.9 trillion dongs, equaling 51.1%; from non-state industrial, commercial and service taxes 55 trillion dongs, equaling 49.5%; from individual high income taxes 30.2 trillion dongs, equaling 65.2%; from environment protection taxes 7.7 trillion dongs, equaling 58.6%; from other fees 4.8 trillion dongs, equaling 53.1% of the yearly estimate.

Total Government expenditures from beginning of the year to 15/8/2012 were at an estimation of 534 trillion dongs, equaling 59.1% of the yearly estimate, of which spending for investment and development was 106.2 trillion dongs, equaling 59% (spending for capital construction only was 102.1 trillion dongs, equaling 58.7%); for economic and social development, national defense and security (including spending for salary rise)  365 trillion dongs, equaling 60.7%; for paying debts and aids 62.9 trillion dongs, equaling 62.9% of the yearly estimate.

Total retailed sales of consumer goods and services


Generally, eight months’ total retailed sales of consumer goods and services were at an estimation of 1,517,700 billion dongs, rose 17.9% from last year’ same period, it would be  6.8% if the factor of price rise were excluded. Of which, the trade business gained 1,171,600 billion dongs, represented 77.2% of the total and rose 17%; the hotel and restaurant: 179.3 trillion dongs, 11.8% and by 19.9%; the service: 150.5 trillion dongs, 9.9% and by 21.1%; the tourist: 16.3 trillion dongs, 1.1% and by 31.3% respectively.

Exports-Imports


Generally, eight months’ export turnovers reached 73.3 billion USD, rose 17.8% from last year ‘same period, of which the domestic economic sector reached 27.7 billion USD, decreased by 1.9%; the FDI sector (including crude oil) reached 45.6 billion USD and rose 34.1%.

About markets for exportation in 8 months, the United States was the largest one with nearly13 billion USD export turnover, rose 18.2% from the same period in 2011; next came to EU with 12.5 billion USD, rose 21.8%; ASEAN: 10.8 billion USD, by 22.8%; Japan: 8.6 billion USD, by 32.3%; China: 8.2 billion USD, by 20,5%.

Generally, eight months’ export turnovers reached 73.4 billion USD, rose 6.7% from the same period last year, of which the domestic economic sector reached 34.8 billion USD, decreased by 8.5% and the FDI sector gained 38.6 billion USD, rose 25.5%.

About markets for exportation in 8 months, China was the largest one with 18.2 billion USD import turnover, rose 17.9% from the same period in 2011; ASEAN:13.7 billion USD, by 1.8%; Republic of Korea: 9.8 billion USD, by 18.8%; Japan: 7.7 billion USD, by 15.5%; EU: 5.2 billion USD, by 6.6%; the United States: 3.2 billion USD, by 7.6%.

Eight months ‘deficit was 62 million USD, equaling 0.08% of total export turnovers.

Consumer price indexes (CPI)


After declining in two consecutive months , CPI in August rose 0.63% from July mainly due to the impact of 3 times of petroleum price rise in July 20 and in August 01 and 13 with a total rise of 2,400 dong per 1 liter of gasoline, 1,650 dongs per 1 liter of diesel oil; gas price increased by 8.02% and some provinces/cities adjusted prices for the medical service according to the joint circular No. 04/2012/TTLT-BYT-BTC dated 29/02/2012 by ministries of Health and Finance. Among groups of goods and services, medicines and health service had the highest pace of 5.44% (the medical service only rose 7.71%); housing and construction material by 2.03%; transport by 1.07%; culture, entertainment and tourist by 0.95%. Other groups with slower or declined CPIs were garments, hats and footgear (+0.57%); education (+0.48%); family appliances (+0.35%); drinks and tobacco (+0.24%); postal and communicational service (-0.01%); catering and related services -0.18%:  (grain food -0.43% and foodstuff -0.27%; outdoor eating and drinking +0.35%).

August’s CPI rose 2.86% from December 2011 and by 5.04% compared to the same period in 2011. Eight months’ average CPI rose 10.41% from that in the same period in 2011.

August’s gold index rose 0.41% from July; declined 7.42% from December 2011 and by 0.38% from the same period in 2011. August’s USD index decreased by 0.15% from July; by 1% from December 2011 and rose 0.89% from the same period in 2011.

Carriage of passengers and cargos

Eight months’ passenger carriage was at an estimation of 1,891.2 million arrivals, rose 12.4% and 81.5 billion passengers-kilometers rose 10.4% from the same period in 2011. Of which central transport gained 28.9 million participants, raised 9.3% and 20 billion passengers-kilometers by 8.1%; local transport reached 1,862.3 million participants, rose 13.4% and 61.5 billion passengers-kilometers by 11.3%. Eight months’ passenger carriage by land reached to an estimation of 1,748.3 million participants, rose 13.5% and 60.2 billion passengers-kilometers by 11.9%; river transport: 120.9 million participants, reduced 1.3% and 2.7 billion passengers-kilometers by 1.7%; air transport: 9.5 million participants, rose 1% and 15.3 billion passengers-kilometers by 8.6%; rail transport: 8.5 million participants, rose 2.4% and 3.2 billion passengers-kilometers by 1.9%; sea transport: 4 million participants, rose 0.6% and 228.6 million passengers-kilometers by 1.5%.

Eight months’ cargo carriage was at an estimation of 640.4 million tons, rose 9.9% and 120.8 billion tons-kilometers, reduced 11% from last year’ same period, of which the domestic transport gained 615 million tons, rose 11.8% and 46.4 billion tons-kilometers by 1%; overseas transport reached 25.4 million tons, reduced 14.7% and 74.4 billion tons-kilometers by 16.4%. Land transport gained 504 million tons, rose 12.5% and 26.5 billion tons-kilometers by 9.4%; river transport: 101.5 million tons, rose 5.3% and 10.2 billion tons-kilometers by 5.1%; sea transport: 30.2 million tons, reduced 16% and 81.1 billion tons-kilometers by 20%; rail transport: 4.6 million tons, reduced 5.8% and 2.7 billion tons-kilometers by 4.2%.

Postal and communicational services

The country’s telephone subscribers as end of August 2012 were at an estimation of 135.8 million, rose 5.2% from last year’ same period, including 15.1 million desk telephone subscribers, falling 2.6% and 120.7 million mobile phone subscribers, rising 6.2%.

The country’s internet subscribers as of end of August 2012 were at an estimation of 4.4 million, rose 15.6% from the same period last year. Eight months’ total postal and communicational service net income was at an estimation of 105 trillion dongs rose 6.8% from the same period in 2011.

International visitors to Viet Nam

Eight months’ international visitors to Viet Nam were at an estimation of 4,385,000 arrivals, rose 9.4% from last year’ same period. Of which, visitors coming for tourist purposes were 2,604,400 arrivals, rose 7.1%; for business purposes 762,200 arrivals by 14%; for visiting relatives 773,300 arrivals by 14.7%.

Social issues


Farmers’ food shortage

According to preliminary reports, the country in August had 11,900 households suffered from food shortage, represented 0.1% of total agricultural families, reduced 21.4% from July, which were in proportion to 55,000 hunger persons, represented 0.1% of total agricultural persons, decreased by 17%. As compared to August 2011, hunger families decreased by 36% and hunger persons by 35%.  

Epidemic diseases and food poisoning


Generally, the country in 8 months of the year had 76,600 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (41 died); over 38,000 cases of hemorrhagic fever (29 died); 370 cases of viral encephalitis (7 died); 76 cases of meningococcal disease (2 died) and 250 cases of typhoid.

More 946 cases infected with HIV were found in the month, bringing total HIV-infected persons over the country as of mid-August 2012 to 258,700, of which 105,600 turned to AIDS and nearly 53,600 died of AIDS.

Generally, there were 91 cases of food poisoning in 8 months, infecting 3,200 persons, of which 17 died.

Traffic accidents


Generally, the country in 8 months had 7,024 cases of traffic accidents, killing 6,128 persons and injuring 5,102 others. As compared to the same period last year, cases of traffic accident decreased by 21.7%; the death by 18.8% and the injured by 26.4%. On average, each day in 8 months of this year, the country had 29 cases of traffic accidents, killing 25 persons and injuring 21 others.

Natural calamity

Typhoon, flood, heavy rains, whirlwind, lightening and landslide occurred in the month caused great damages by persons and properties, impacting on production and people’s life in many provinces over the country. According to preliminary reports, natural calamity made 67 persons died and gone missing, 153 persons injured; over 800 houses collapsed and swept away; 16,700 houses flooded, broken down, roofs blown away; nearly 31,200 ha of rice and 3,600 ha of vegetables flooded and damaged. Total value of damage caused by calamity in the month was at an estimation of 444 billion dongs, of which Son La province suffered most damage of 150 billion dongs.

Environmental protection

In August, 342 cases of violation of rules on environmental sanitation were found in 31 provinces and cities, of which 307 cases were treated with total fines of nearly 1.7 billion dongs. Binh Dinh was the province that had the most cases of environmental violation with 89 cases, mainly related to illegal destroying of forest, violation of administrative procedures in transporting forest products, illegal trading and keeping of forest products.
